Despite being frequently overshadowed by her essays, Didion’s novels represent a significant body of work by themselves. While her sparse and elliptical writing may seem overdone in some of her other novels, here it serves to emphasize the paranoia and panic Maria faces. This novel manages to be simultaneously a vivid picture of a time and place, a la The Great Gatsby, and a piece of art in its own right. A-
